"Medical Marijuana: The Debate Rages On."

Summary

In “Medical Marijuana: The Debate Rages On”, the author describe the pros and cons of the most controversial debate of all time on medical marijuana. Instead of marijuana the term we’re familiar with are “Pot” and “Weed”, but the scientific name is Cannabis. This name comes from plant Cannabis Sativa. Marijuana smoking became famous in US among “flower people” in 1960’s. US and many countries consider marijuana smoking illegal and possession of it is crime punishable by law. But in some countries marijuana is considered as herbal medicine. Recent studied has declared that some substance in marijuana has medical proprieties, and it can be used in terminal disease: cancer or AIDS. In 1999 the Department of Health and Human Service studied marijuana’s medical properties. The result is the Institute of Medicine’s “Marijuana & Medicine: Assessing the Science Base.” The result stated the pros and cons but did not give clear conclusion. After ten years of its publication the debate is still going on. In 2006 US Food & Drug Administration listed marijuana in Controlled Substances Act, Schedule I for major three reasons: 1. High potential of abuse, 2. No current accepted medical use in United States, and 3. Lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision. But technologies and our understanding in medicine has been improved since 1999. Therefore, more research on marijuana’s medical proprieties is needed to update the IOM’s 1999 report.

Personal Response

In my personal opinion there is not enough evidence on use of marijuana as medicine. By the study all we know is it’s not healthy to smoke marijuana. Also it has high rate of abuse. It should be illegalized until the researchers find the evidence of its medical proprieties, which has no side effects.

I have to disagree. There have been studies done there's nothing in it that hurts you and it saved my daughters life! You don't see the evidence of it because politics don't want you to see it. Go to your own family phsyicain and ask them which is better to smoke "Pot" or cigarettes. The answere will always be "Pot". They won't legalize it because it is a nocontrolable item. It's a weed. It can grow anywhere. Sorry I have to disagree with you on this and tell you to go do some research on this. What bad theings do they have to say about it? And it does have side effects. Matter of fact go to California and be pregnant. If you can't hold food down and are not gaining weight right or your in pain, you get "pot". What do you get in any other state for pain while being pregnant? Nothing! Now what does it do to you? It takes the pain away, relaxes you, and makes you eat. However, a side effect it made me dizzy and severly tired. Do research before you bash something.

Here's what I think...For any government to tell us that we cannot use a plant, in this case a weed, that God created, seems ludicrous. It is used just as it is grown, not processed like cocaine, or synthetic like LSD or Meth.

I, myself, do not use it because I don't like to smoke anything. (Hurts my poor little throat.) But, to me the only reason that it is not legal is because, as J.P. said, it can grow anywhere and the government has no way to control it, or even more important, to TAX it. That's the main issue...they want their part of the money.

I think there have been plenty of studies that show the benefits and side effects. While it's true that there is a chance of over-use, is this any different that getting drunk? All this is is Prohibition, round two. I think it needs to be legalized. This would eliminate crime that may be connected to it, and free up a lot of law enforcement spending time and money on something that in many ways is no worse (if not more beneficial) than alcohol.

Dimple, may I offer a bit of personal criticism here? It seems you often write a very good article, and ask very good questions, but when it comes to the end of your blog you often come to the same conclusion. "Needs more research." Give an opinion based on what you know now. Don't be afraid to be wrong! Just put it out there!
