Chemical Compound Effective in Destroying Antibiotic-Resistant Biofilms

The recent research done at the North Carolina State University have found chemical compound that help prevent biofilms infection produced by antibiotic resistant strain. This chemical work when it is used in conjugation with conventional antibiotics. One of the most common antibiotic resistant bacteria forming biofilms are staphylococcus strain of MRSA, and acinetobacter. Infections from biofilms are hard to treat because when bacteria attach to surface and form biofilms, there are sticky layers that protect them from immune system and antibiotics. When you have infection from more than one strain of bacteria, you would have to treat them with multiple drugs which could help form biofilms or antibiotic resistance.
Dr. Christian Melander is a chemist from NC State has showed that when combining a compound made from 2-aminoimidazoles with antibiotics can destroy bacteria from biofilms. His next step is to see if this combination can prevent antibiotic resistant strain from the biofilms. In the research they have found that when treating bacteria with compound of 2-aminoimidazoles, and then introducing penicillin antibiotic one hour later increased penicillin effectiveness. And the bacteria were resistant to penicillin before. And also compound helped disperse biofilms.
